Summer Camp 2012

Greetings Parents & Scouts.......

It is that time again to talk about summer camp. The scouts have made their wishes known for camp, and during the summer months, we have worked hard to make this a reality.  Things are a little different this year, so please read the information closely that is being presented and of course, ask questions.  A scout may attend one or both camps (provided the age/grade requirement is met for the Chisholm Trail).  Here we go!

Troop 160 will be offering two summer camps:

USS Yorktown & Camp Barstow
Scouts will spend 2 nights on the aircraft carrier the USS Yorktown and 1 week at Camp Barstow
Friday & Saturday, June 8 & 9 – Yorktown
Sunday – Saturday, June 10-16 – Camp

Camp Barstow

* Located in Charleston & Columbia, South Carolina respectively
* 2 Nights on the Yorktown, and depart Sunday morning for Barstow (about a 2 hour drive)
* Camp offers basic merit badges + other activities
* Transportation to South Carolina is charter bus.  We've asked our friends at Troop 175 to join us, this will help minimize the bus cost (and to provide a great opportunity for both troops).

Webelos 2 that are crossing over into the troop are encouraged to attend this trip.

To all scouts: The chance to stay on aircraft carrier does not occur often, so take advance of this opportunity.

Chisholm Trail High Adventure (@ Camp Sid Richardson)
This high adventure offers a week of adventure and water activities
Saturday, June 23 – Saturday June 30

Chisholm Trail

Chisholm Trail:
* Fly to Dallas, TX (camp is about 1 1/2 hours from Dallas) w/ground transportation from airport to Camp.
* Arrive at Camp on Saturday, depart the following Saturday with evening arrival in Ft. Lauderdale (airfare is less with a Saturday night stay over at destination)
* Travel around Lake Bridgeport during camp is via pontoon boat.  Scouts will not be able to bring their ‘camp trunk’.  Packing will be discussed later.
* We are not participating in the Base Camp at Sid Richardson.  NO merit badges will be offered.  This is High Adventure only.
* Scouts MUST be 13 years old or a graduate of the 7th grade and must pass the BSA swimmer’s test to participate in Chisholm Trail.  NO exceptions!!!!

If you decide to attend the high adventure summer camp trip please sign up with a $50 deposit by October 13.  You will also need to make another $50 deposit on October 27.

Why are we starting sign ups for summer camp so early?
On the high adventure camp the boys (and adults) will be in crews.  This is similar to the National High Adventure Bases like Philmont and Northern Tier.  Our crew(s) will be assigned to a boat.  The boats are used to transport our crew(s) to their various adventure area.  Camp Sid Richards has a limited number of boats, therefore we need to reserve our boat(s) as soon as possible.  The deposits to Sid Richards are not refundable therefore we cannot reserve more boats than we need.  In addition scouts from all over the country attend this camp.  If we delay the boats will be reserved by others.

Who can attend?
The camp requires that scouts be at least 13 or have completed the 7th grade.  I am further imposing that scouts must have attended at least one previous summer camp (or equivalent).  If scouts have not previously completed a backpacking trip, I'm requesting that those scouts, also attend our December backpacking trip.  If you are not able to attend this trip you should at a minimum complete one of the hiking trips (the Big Toe or the Old Cutler Hike).  You should also be committed to work as a crew.  That is, working together with your fellow high adventures scouts.  You should also be committed to getting yourself physically fit for this trip.  Please take advantage of the opportunities that you have in the troop program this year to challenge yourself, grow yourself physically and improve your skills.  Lastly, proper scout like behavior is an expectation for all of our activities, this is NO EXCEPTION.  If you fail to meet this requirement you will not attend this event and if your space cannot be filled by another scout your deposit will not be refunded.

How many people can attend the high adventure camp?
I personally hope that everyone that is eligible to attend will sign up.  This trip is NOT limited to 15 people.  If 24 people sign up we will try to reserve 2 boats, one for 15 people and another for 9.   There are a limited number of boats available and each boat has a specific size.  We will try to match the boat capacity to the number of people that sign up.  Those people who have signed up but cannot be assigned to a boat will be put on a waiting list.  People will be assigned to a boat in the order that they signed up.  This means that the sooner you sign up the better the chances you can be assigned to a boat.  The later you sign up the chances of going on the waiting list increase.

ALSO VERY IMPORTANT: The number of boys that may attend is dependent on the number of adult leaders that attend.  We need to have at least 2 or 3 leaders per boat.
