February 17-19, 2012 Troop 160, along with approximately 2,500 other scouts attended Scoutmasters Camporee in Markham Park. This year's theme was the Wide World of Scouting. The Troop selected Japan as their country to represent. The boys worked hard to prepare for this event. For this year's camporee the Chili Team created "Darth Steppers Ninja Slap Chili". Their effort was awarded by receiving the top prize, the Golden Spoon. The Spirit team, led by Darth Stepper and Step-Bot, supported the Chili team. Members of Team Gazelle awoke before to run in the 5K. The Troop competed in the Dutch Oven competition for the first time and earned 1st place for their peach cobbler. The Gateway team created a 25 foot high gateway with a canoe on top to represent a Japanese Shinto. It came out great and the team won 2nd place in our section. The design team build a red Japanese dog head float that was large enough to fit 4 scouts inside. They also created a Japanese tea house, in which our resident ninja met with the campsite judge. The gateway team build camp gadgets and a sand garden. All this helped the troop earn best campsite for the Camporee. There were LOTS of daytime activities, a parade and the arena show with fireworks.
February 4-5, 2012 The mighty hikers for Troop 160 took on the Barefoot mailman hike. The boys made several practice hikes before taking this 2 day 35 mile hike which commemorates a portion of the historic barefoot mailman route. The hike begins in Pompano Beach before 6:00AM on Saturday and end in South Beach in Miami on Sunday. The boys travel across urban streets, state park trails, beaches and boardwalks. At one point the boys are even transported on a boat by the coast guard, all while traveling with their backpacks containing the equipment and the provisions they will need for the weekend. The boys camp in Haulover Park. On Sunday morning the boys are joined by the Big Toe hikers for the remaining 12 miles. January 14-15, 2012 The boys enjoyed this challenging backpacking trip on the Kitching Creek trail in Johnathan Dickinson State Park. They hiked 9 miles the first day and about 8 on the second day. The temperature got low at night but enthusiasm stayed high. It was nice having our new Bugler sounding the way. December 2-4, 2011 On this camping trip to Key Largo we planned to go snorkeling, but the ocean conditions were too rough. Plan "B" didn't work out either, so we turned to plan sea, Theater of the Sea. In the evening the boys watched a movie in our campsite. After breaking camp on Sunday the boys went on a feeding frenzy. (They had breakfast, but I guess there is nothing like nachos at 10:30AM).
November 20, 2011 Troop 160 gave back to the community and the world by helping with Operation Christmas Child. OCC helps provide children in poor and remote parts of the world with shoe box sized Christmas presents of toiletries and small toys. The troop learned about the struggles these kids face and we did are part to help make things a little better for them. November 19, 2011 The mighty hikers of Troop 160 walked 12 miles starting from the Freedom Tower in downtown Miami to Pinecrest Gardens in south Dade. This was for the 38th annual Old Cutler Trail Hike. There weren't any bears on this trail, but there were plenty of zillion dollar homes, exotic cars, picturesque views, famous Miami sites and hundreds of scouts. November 4-6, 2011 The troop took to the high seas, by chartering the Mary B III. It was a cool and windy night, but many of the boys and parents caught fish. Some were big enough to clean and eat the next day (for the fishing merit badge). The boys toured some of the coast guard boat and went to the beach. Mayday the dog was fun when he wasn't eating your food (or clothes, tent, etc). The boys also went to Jackson's Ice Cream Parlor. October 27, 2011 The boys work and play at that our troop meetings. Tonight's activity.. the mummy game. October 22, 2011 Kon'nichiwa. Greetings from the Morikami and Japanese Gardens and Museum. The boys had a good time, learned a bit more about Japan and got some good ideas for our campsite at Scoutmasters' Camporee. October 15, 2011 It was a blustery day of kayaking in Oleta River State Park, but the guys had a good time. We saw large herons, paddled through mangroves, and had some beach time.
Some of the scouts from Troop 160 took a 5 mile hike. We started at Tree Tops park and ended at Flamingo Gardens. The purpose of the trip was to complete second class requirement 1b. Many of the boys had previously completed the requirement but were hiking to prepare themselves for upcoming longer hikes. September 11, 2011 On September 11, 2011 the troop helped serve in New Testament Baptist Church's Patriots Day service and celebration.July 31, 2011 See also pictures from other years |
